Southern Tier Crop Congress

On Wednesday, January 22, 2020 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County in conjunction with the Southwestern NY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team will be hosting the Southern Tier Crop Congress in Belfast, NY from 9 am to 2:30 pm. This meeting will feature recent updates in field crop and forage production as we look into the 2020 growing season.

Sign in will begin at 9:00 am, and light morning refreshments will be available for you as you walk around our trade show. At 9:45 am, we will begin our morning season, breaking for a complementary lunch at which time you will be able to speak with industry representatives before we start our afternoon session.

To register, download form, fill out the information, and send it to the address provided. Fee is $20.00 per person for those farms who are enrolled in CCE and prepay before our early registration deadline. Those not enrolled in our program who prepay before our deadline pay $25.00 per person to register. Any late or walk-in registrations will be accepted with a $30.00 per person fee.If you have any questions, feel free to contact us either by email or by phone. We hope to see you there.

9:45-10:00AM - Opening remarks + introduction of SWNY Dairy, Livestock, Field Crops Team 

10:00-10:45AM – Insect identification and control in corn and soybean production systems in New York Mike Stanyard, Field Crops Specialist and Team Leader with NWNY Dairy, Livestock Field Crops Team *Dr. Stanyard will be discussing some of the recent insect issues in corn and soybeans and management options for certain species to boost productivity in New York. 

10:45-11:30AM – Field crop disease update and management options of current diseases found in New York Gary Bergstrom, Plant Pathologist at Cornell University *Dr. Bergstrom will hone in on some new disease findings here in New York and discuss some tools for managing diseases in field crops. With a couple of difficult years, disease management is key to maintaining high yields, crop quality, and standability. 

11:45-12:45PM – Lunch & Trade Show 

12:45-1:30PM – Keeping long term hay fields productive Dan Steward, Consultant with Western NY Crop Management *Mr. Steward will discuss setting goals for forage quality and how cutting schedule, species selection, soil fertility and fertilization contribute to success. He will also discuss weed management and alternatives for re-seeding in forage systems. 

1:30-2:15PM – Palmer amaranth confirmed in row crops in Southwest New York – management options for this highly problematic weed. Josh Putman, Field Crops Specialist with SWNY Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Team *Palmer amaranth is one of the most problematic weed species in the United States. Its biology and ability to become resistant to multiple classes of herbicides make this weed very difficult to control. We will discuss biology, identification methods, closely related species, and management tools for this newly found weed species in Southwest New York.
