Irrigation Training for Small Farms

Please join us for a vegetable and berry growers meeting about irrigation system. Hosted by CCE Allegany County, Allegany County Soil & Water Conservation Service and Natural Resource Conservation Service; the program will be held at Off Duty Inc. located at 5184 State Route 244, Belmont, NY 14813. 

Agenda 9:30 Registration and Welcome
10:00 - Noon Liz Madison will present tips and strategies for planning and designing a suitable irrigation system, plus maintenance and operations issues. Steve Reiners will cover irrigation timing for maximum benefit, how drip irrigation influences the health and marketability of vegetables, and how soil management plays an important role in getting the most out of irrigation.
Noon -1:00 Lunch
1:00 - 2:30 Continuation of morning session. Additional topics: water source management and tips for controlling weeds and algae in irrigation ponds.

Steve Reiners is Professor and Chair of the Horticulture Section of Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science. A native of New Jersey, he joined Cornell in 1994 as a statewide extension vegetable specialist. His research and extension efforts are designed to maintain and enhance the profitability and sustainability of New York vegetable farmers, both for the short and long term. Short-term projects are designed to provide growers with the best cultural methods to grow crops, i.e., fertility management; irrigation; optimizing plant populations; and variety selection for the processing vegetable industry. Long-term projects include fine-tuning cover crop use to maximize nutrient recycling and reduce disease incidence; improving fertilizer recommendations; and determining how variety selection and fertility practices affect pest tolerance.

Liz Madison, Empire Drip Supply, has been designing irrigation systems for the last 5 years and has worked in the Ag irrigation industry for almost 10 years. She grew up on a 65 -acre mixed fruit farm of mostly apples, peaches, cherries, berries, grapes and other field crops. Her practical farm experience has comes in handy when designing systems that actually work with normal farm logistics. She specializes in drip and micro irrigation design, and having done systems from ¼ acre gardens all the way up to multi-farm projects at thousands of gallons a minute. Using google earth, to get fairly accurate measurements and even elevations, Liz has worked with lots of different types of farms; from row crops, orchards, vineyards, greenhouses, hemp, hops, and more.
